Nexus, designed by Juan Cruz del Granado, is an innovative kitchen unit that combines aesthetics, functionality, and Japanese philosophy. Inspired by principles such as Kanzo (elimination of surplus), Fukinsei (asymmetry), Shibumi (beautiful being discreet), Datsuzoku (surprise), and Wa (harmony), Nexus aims to optimize space, enhance efficiency, and provide a visually pleasing experience.
What sets Nexus apart is its focus on integration and agility. The unit seamlessly incorporates appliances, devices, and storage spaces necessary for cooking, ensuring that everything is easily accessible. The central counter, the most frequently used area, is ergonomically designed, while the washing and cooking sectors are strategically placed on the sides, allowing users to have everything they need within reach.
The construction of Nexus involves a combination of materials and technologies. The support base is made of recessed steel, providing reinforcement and housing for internal components. Thermoformed plastic is used for the drawers and refrigerator, while the counter is made of Corian, which is cut and folded to form the sink. Stainless steel and acrylic tubes are utilized for the shelves, and the drainer is made of perforated stainless steel. The result is a unit that is not only functional but also visually appealing.
With dimensions of 1650mm wide, 620mm deep (reduced to 580mm on the left side), and 920mm high (1440mm with the raised cupboard), Nexus is designed to fit seamlessly into compact living spaces.
The interaction with Nexus is designed to be intuitive and efficient. Divided into three areas - cooking and storage, work and food storage, and washing and cleaning - the unit optimizes resources and time. Voice control allows users to operate the smoke extractor and cupboards, while smartphone connectivity enables temperature and time regulation of the electric oven.
Developed as a dissertation project for Industrial Design V at the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina, Nexus was inspired by the growing trend of micro-houses in Buenos Aires. Targeted at young, tech-savvy individuals between the ages of 25 and 35, Nexus aims to provide a harmonious and practical solution for small living spaces.
Despite the challenges faced during the design process, such as integrating components and achieving the desired aesthetic language, Nexus emerged as a product that maximizes space utilization and enhances the user experience. With its elegant finish and precise craftsmanship using materials like Corian, stainless steel, and acrylic, Nexus brings a sense of lightness, cleanliness, and peace to any micro-house kitchen.
In recognition of its outstanding design and ingenuity, Nexus was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Home Appliances Design category in 2019. This prestigious award acknowledges designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving the quality of life.
